December: Blue Zircon

The official birthstone for the month of December is the stunning blue zircon. Also known as “Starlite”, the blue zircon comes in a range of colors, but is most noted for its aqua blue hue. This color is achieved by heat treatment, but only some zircon have the right physical structure to turn blue when heated. The majority of those capable of change are found in Cambodia, though they can be found in Vietnam and Thailand as well.

The blue zircon is said to represent purity, protection and good luck. Old tales have associated the zircon with the power to relieve pain, ensure peaceful sleep and protect travelers from disease and injury.
